The American Film Institute (AFI), a national, non-profit institute located
in Hollywood, California, provides leadership, education, and recognition of
excellence in the art of film, television and digital media. The group is perhaps
most recognizable on Oscar Night as they present their annual Life Achievement
Award, the highest honor given for a career in film and television.
Convening a superb panel of film community leaders, they have selected the
100 greatest American movies of all time. See if your favorite is in the top
ten, if not, build out your rental list.
Here is the complete list of the Best 100:
1. CITIZEN KANE (1941) – Orson Welles, 25, wrote, starred in, directed,
and produced this classic, still Number One of everyone’s list.
2. CASABLANCA (1942) – The
ending is still sad after all these years!
3. THE GODFATHER (1972) – “I made him an offer he couldn’t
refuse," the line that helps make this epic mobster movie unforgettable.
4. GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) – Awarded Best Picture,
Best Director, Best Actress (Vivien Leigh as Scarlett), Best Screenplay, Best
Color Cinematography,
Best Interior Decoration, Best Film Editing, and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie
McDaniel as Mamie the maid and the first time for an African American
to be so honored).
5. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) – Thomas Edward Lawrence,
known to his family as Ned, was born in Wales in 1888. Serving with the British
Military Intelligence
in the Middle East, he used what he had learned to promote Arab causes. While
the British Government had been well aware of his achievement, at the end of
the war he was almost unknown to the general public. The true story, uncovered
in 1919 when an American journalist, Lowell Thomas, arrived in London, the
romantic account of the Bible-land victories was a huge success in a country
which was numbed by the horrors of European trench warfare. Lawrence quickly
became a popular hero and the movie became a classic.
6. THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) – Shirley Temple was offered
the part but could not get out of her contract with Fox Film Corporation and
so it went
to a little known actress and singer, 17-year-old Judy Garland.

us in the 60s!

heroes and princess warriors of the future. Still fighting for what’s
right!

captain of an old,
temperamental, tramp steamer while Hepburn is cast as a prissy but proper

War I African missionary spinster caught in the backwaters of German occupation
in Africa. Who would have guessed at the love that begrudgingly finds its

ever, supported wonderfully by Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Ward Bond,
and Mary Astor.
